How and why we developed this amazing luxury bed & breakfast
Driving up to view Kaywana Hall on a wet February afternoon over seven years ago was the start of a long journey. We knew before we had even stepped inside that this was a very special place. Built in 1962 it was one of only five Devon "butterfly houses" with its distinctive butterfly-shaped roof.
Unloved and neglected, Kaywana Hall was in need of some TLC. Eighteen months later after many highs and lows it was ours and we arrived on a sunny May morning to move in.
For two years we lived in the original house thinking about the options and talking to architects. A chance article in the Sunday Times lead us to Brixham Architect Stan Bolt who has been responsible for numerous contemporary houses in and around South Devon. Stan proposed that we strip away some of the clumsy later additions and keep the main part of the house true to its original design, thus you will notice a modern version of the butterfly house. Light and airy with much use of glass, this is a truly stunning building.
Stan designed the house so that the guest suites are detached from the main house allowing visitors to have their own space yet not feel far away. Thus the idea of a luxury bed and breakfast was conceived with guests being able to come and go as they please without feeling that they are intruding on the owners' private space.
Tucked away at the end of a private drive and set amongst twelve acres of woodland, Kaywana Hall Bed and Breakfast is the perfect retreat for guests who want peace and tranquillity, yet close enough to the popular Devon town of Dartmouth.
It is unusual to find a modern and contemporary B&B housed in such an architecturally stunning building and that’s what makes us stand out from the crowd.
